Whaleshark diving in Oslob
If you are interested in SCUBA diving, in whalesharks or in the particulars of shark conservation, you may have heard of Oslob. Oslob is in the Vasayas region of the Philippines, where local fishermen have “befriended” whalesharks by feeding them small shrimps caught at night. The shrimps are the very same that brings the whalesharks to the area, but the abundance of whalesharks and the resulting emerging tourism indicated, that the day-time feeding may be disruptive to the migratory patterns of the sharks, as they seem to stay at Oslob, once they first arrive. There’s a very interesting blog-article about this over at Sharksavers and I encourage you to give it a read. Is this sort of tourism to be encouraged – or does the disruption it may cause outweigh the benefits of showing these gentle giants of the sea to the population at large? Let us know what you think.
